"In the Garden" Again: Hummingbird and Fuchsia from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Spring is waning and summer is near. Porches are bedecked with hanging flower pots brimming with blooms, and among my (Teri's) favorites is the fuchsia. Its colors are so vibrant and the design is magnificently detailed—a perfect companion to our little feathered friend, the hummingbird. You won't believe how fun it is to create these ribbon fuchsias, and they aren't as hard as they look like they'd be—promise! It feels a bit magical when you are gathering these petals.

As before, the printed pattern includes all the ribbon you need to create this block ...

Here were the original layouts
for this design and it would be
so fun to make a center pieced
medallion and add the applique'.

Then I started playing with
a long wall hanging and
layering the applique' sets
from the 4 way layout.
It is just so cheerful and a
 bit smaller.

Then I was onto fabric selection.

Village Wanderings—Homes from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Last year, Kara and I (Teri) had designed these four little homes with the plan to teach them at our local wool shop, Primitive Homespuns Wool and Needleworks. Initially, they were to be finished as individual little projects to fit in a frame, which could be switched out with the seasons. Then life happened and a pandemic hit. No classes.

The houses were complete, and we were ready to write the patterns, but we had so many requests to teach them at the Academy of Appliqué that we decided to put the pattern release on hold until that event was ...

Foundation Paper Piecing + Needle Turn Appliqué: The Notorious R.B.G. is Ready to Join Her International Sisters from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Do you remember seeing "a little secret sewing" on my to-do list last week?  I had SEW much fun making this "Notorious R.B.G." block for my quilting friend Preeti, based on her popular International Sisters Block Tutorial (find it on her Sew Preeti Quilts blog here).

My Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg Block, Ready to Join Her Sisters

If you haven't seen Preeti's International Sisters blocks yet, you should pop over to Preeti's tutorial to read how the block came about.  Preeti stumbled upon a quilt block called African Queen a few years ago and drafted ...

Maybe I CAN Be a Quilter from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

This past summer, we—along with eleven other designers—participated in a Mystery Stitch-Along. Our block was the Harvest Basket, which you can read about by clicking here. Kara and I (Teri) each stitched the block, as one was destined to be stitched into the Woolen Oak Mystery Quilt, and we wanted to keep one. I decided to create a small wall hanging with the one I made.

I thought I would just do a small border of one-inch squares, pulling colors from the basket block. Color is my favorite part of the process, so this took me an afternoon ...

LEAVES from Nestlings By Robin

I love designing them,
looking at them, &
making them!

Sometimes getting them just
where I want them can be
a bit tricky so here are a few
tips for better alignment.
Remember nature isn't perfect
and we don't have to be either!

Here is my traced
leaf with my lines going
way beyond where my
template would have been.
I do this so that I can
measure 1/4" past the
point for my seam allowance.
To place leaves, put a pin
straight through at the seam
allowance point and into the
vine where you want
them to ...

Sweet Persimmons from Nestlings By Robin

I have never had a persimmon
and maybe I should try
one now that I have named
a quilt after them:)
New in the November
issue of AQ Magazine
meet Sweet Persimmons.
This sweet design started
out in a 30s rendition.

Once I started thinking in Autumn
colors, I came up with this palette.
Still really like it and may have
to put this grouping to work
in another project!

Looks great, right?

Sometimes I can't see past my
own vision but I also had
this Sandy Gervais print sitting
around that I had been wanting
to use in ...

October OMG Finish from Quilt Paint Create

I finished Birds last night.

The quilt is an adaption of the pattern Blue Sky Birds from the book Tile Quilt Revival by Carol Gilham Jones. All the applique is by hand.

I started this quilt back in 2017. I didn’t get very far before I had to set it aside to pull fabrics together for a class. The class was a weekend trip, and I never did get back to Birds. I pulled it out earlier this year and switched out all the fabrics. I liked the new choices so much better, which made working on this quilt ...

We Built This City from Wendy's Quilts and More

What a thrill it was to see my quilt hanging in our guild's exhibition last weekend.  It really glowed in the dark exhibition space. And the rosette on it matched the colours in my quilt perfectly!

Some months ago I mentioned that I was going to repurpose my blocks from Jen Kingwell's Marshall Mystery Quilt - published in Quiltmania during 2019.  I didn't really like the layout in the magazine when the quilt was finally revealed.  I came to the conclusion that I would prefer to make two quilts with my blocks, rather than to try and use ...

Sunday Stash September 27, 2020 from Quilt Paint Create

No fabric in or out this week.

I finished the Birds top.

Everything is hand appliqued. I decided not to add a lot of embroidery as the top is busy enough as is. I will add eyes to the birds and feet to the bird standing on the branch, but no more than that.

All the greens came out of my scrap basket. This is the third quilt I’ve made from my green scraps, and the basket is still full. Is it even possible to use up a scrap container?

I’m beginning to think not.

Fabric In: 17 ...

Sunday Stash September 20, 2020 from Quilt Paint Create

No fabric in or out this week.

I finished most the applique on Birds. There are a few more leaves to add once the borders are on.

After seeing how much time it takes to pre-wash fabrics, I remember why I never did it. I washed the border fabrics today, and the reds gave off a lot of color. Some I had to wash twice. I’m glad I washed them, but I need to remember to factor that time into my sewing plans.

Fabric In: 17.75

Fabric Out: 15.25 yards

Net Fabric In: 2.5 yards

How ...

Well-Loved Ladies QAL: Currants from Nestlings By Robin

                                                   http://nestlingsbyrobin.com/lectures--workshops.html
Welcome to Block 1.
The photo above is from the
center of a circa 1860
quilt in my collection.
The quilting is a cross hatch done
in 1/4" grid which gives it a
fabulous look and feel!

where I wanted to showcase the
variations of designs because
I am fascinated by how designs
have evolved over time.

Most of the time this block
is seen with berries added but
I do like the simplicity of this layout.

This plant was being grown here in
the US during the mid 19th century time
allowing quilters ...

September 2020 Short List from Quilt Paint Create

Fall is in the air here. The nights are cooler and the days shorter. The changing season shifts my attention away from outside activities, to home and holidays. The cooler it gets, the more I want to sew and stitch.

I finished the tee shirt and framing project in August.

Going forward, if I am passing on a category I will leave it off the list. The list will include only active categories.

The Short List categories are UFO, garment, original design, stitchery, framing, charity and other. I’ve used some form of this system for 6 years to keep ...

MAY 2020 from Nestlings By Robin

MAY 2020
This month deserves EVERY
bit of bold, larger, underlined
text available to me!!
We started the month by going
to Virginia to help my mom
with some things around
the house and to spend
Mother's Day with her.

We did tons of yard work
and I got covered in ticks-YUCK!!!!
Once home, one of the bites
wasn't reacting right so I was
tested / treated for Lyme disease.
My test came back negative but
to this day (2 months later) that
one bite isn't right.
Be careful out there!

Unfortunately, this would
be the last trip ...

Diane’s Roseville Album Quilt from The Cloth Parcel

We are bubbling over with excitement (and relief) to show Diane’s Roseville Album applique quilt!  It’s finished- yay! This project was started so many years ago that we can’t even remember the actual year.  Possibly even before we started our business in 2012.  We did show pictures of it in progress in previous posts, so it may look […]

Going Around in Circles from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Last week, Kara share a tutorial for appliquéing tiny circles. It seems that we appliqué artists never run out of circles to stitch in our designs, so I (Teri) thought we might look at a few other methods, and focus on one of my favorites.

Circles, like the soul, are neverending and turn round and round without a stop. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

As Kara noted last week, when we taught this first class a few years ago, this block (an Elly Sienkiewicz design) needed some small berries. In my version of the block, I made the berries in three different ...

The Tension Wrecker Apprehended: Pigtail Guide on M-Class Bobbin Case Increases Bobbin Tension! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Good morning, friends, and happy Sunday!  I've just returned from "Drive By Communion" in my church parking lot!  I kid you not -- Crazy times.  We watched the live streamed worship online this morning as usual (or, as has BECOME usual since early March), but this is the first Sunday since early March that they've offered in-person communion in the parking lot, served by masked and gloved pastors.  We are blessed at Christ Lutheran with church leadership that is faithful, creative, and prudent.  We didn't see a lot of cars when we went for Drive-By communion following the ...

Perfect Circles from Wendy's Quilts and More

So many people commented on my circle blocks in last week's post.

Everyone wanted to know how I got them looking so good!  Well, I followed Jen Kingwell's video on YouTube.  I've put a link to it here so you can watch it too.

Jen uses Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Circles and Bigger Perfect Circles.  I already had these circles in my cupboard because I use them for wool felt applique.  They last for ever and ever (as long as you don't distort them with a super hot iron).  Most quilt shops stock Perfect Circles ...
